May’s Book of the Month

Going beyond the book means exploring additional resources to deepen your understanding and engagement with the material.

Getting Through the Book in 30 days

Pace Yourself

Be sure when you are taking on this project you:

  1. Set realistic goals: Be honest with yourself about how much time you have available and how quickly you can comfortably read.
  2. Take Breaks: Take a few minutes to stretch, walk around, or do something else to give your mind a break.
  3. Mix it Up: You could switch to a different genre, read a few chapters at a time, or alternate between reading and listening to an audiobook.
  4. DON’T FORCE IT

1 Chapter a day

Although the idea of reading one chapter a day may appear overwhelming, it can be achieved with the support of a community. By working together, we can accomplish our goal of completing the entire book. You can make time to read, even if it’s just for 20 minutes in the morning or 2 hours in the afternoon. If you’re short on time, consider listening to an audiobook while walking your dog or as part of your nighttime routine. Just like scrolling through social media for 30 minutes, reading one chapter can be just as effortless and rewarding.

Audio Book

Audiobooks can be a more immersive experience for some people, as they can hear the story come to life through different voices, sound effects, and music. This can help with comprehension and engagement. With audiobooks, you can listen while doing other things, such as exercising, cooking, or commuting. This can make it easier to find time for reading, especially for those who have a hard time carving out dedicated reading time. For people with visual impairments or other disabilities that make reading traditional books difficult, audiobooks can be a more accessible option.

Go Beyond the Book

Expanding your learning and entertainment beyond books can be a great way to deepen your understanding of a topic and find new sources of inspiration. Books can offer valuable insights, but they often represent a limited perspective. Other forms of media, such as podcasts and videos, can offer a wider range of perspectives and experiences. To keep you more engaged watching a video or listening to a podcast can be a more engaging experience than reading, especially for people who struggle with reading or have shorter attention spans.

Monk Mind

There are three core components to developing a monk mind: awareness, intention, and action. Awareness involves being present in the moment. Intention involves setting clear goals and aligning one’s actions with one’s values and beliefs. And action involves taking steps towards those goals and actively practicing compassion, service, and gratitude in one’s daily life.

Meditation

Meditation involves intentionally directing one’s attention and awareness towards a specific object or sensation, such as the breath or a mantra. By doing so, meditation can help quiet the mind, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase self-awareness and emotional regulation.

Mindfullness

By practicing mindfulness, setting clear goals, and aligning one’s actions with one’s values, it is possible to develop a more peaceful, purposeful, and fulfilling life.
